Steel fibre reinforced jointless concrete floor slab with light grey dry shake topping, Watford by industrial concrete flooring contractors

nw1A warehouse operator and distributor in Watford, Hertfordshire, required a specifically designed steel fibre jointless industrial concrete floor slab to provide them with a suitable high performance concrete floor with the benefit of aesthetic enhancement from a coloured concrete floor topping.

Nationwide Concrete Flooring was contracted to design and construct the steel fibre concrete floor on behalf of their new client. The concrete floor design system selected by the industrial concrete floor contractor and subsequently agreed with the clients brief was a Bekaert steel fire combi-slab system. The Bekaert steel fibre combi-slab system is designed to withstand extreme loads in conjunction with a guaranteed crack width, which in itself is an absolute incredible achievement with something regarded as so simple a an industrial concrete floor slab.

Nationwide Concrete Flooring the industrial concrete flooring specialists from Goole in East Yorkshire, embrace this steel fibre floor slab technology and hope that other clients will adopt the same “you get what you pay for” philosophy.  The initial process began with the installation of the final sub base compacting layer being installed utilising the groups laser controlled equipment. The stone trimming material was carefully selected in conjunction with the main contractor to ensure compatibility and a suitable working platform for which to lay the steel fibre reinforced jointless concrete floor slab.

It is essential for the long term performance of any concrete floor slab, that the final layer of sub grade is laid, levelled and compacted properly. Flooring the above processes, the steel profile permanent construction joints were installed in the middle of the two concrete pours and around the columns as de bonding surrounds.

The Readymixed concrete supplied by London Concrete was directly discharged onto the concrete workfare and laid to tolerances as per the Concrete Societies TR34 document for the design and construction of concrete floor slabs and utilising the Somero SXP- D laser screed concrete levelling machine.

During the power floating process a light grey dry shake surface sprinkle topping and surface hardener manufactured by Sika (formerly Armorex) was applied and to the surface of the fresh concrete and monolithically bonded via the powerfloating operations. On completion of the concrete powerfloating, a floor sealer and dust inhibiting compounds was applied to the floor.
