Jointless steel fibre reinforced suspended concrete floor slab, Wylye Salt Barn, Wylye in Wiltshire

A new salt barn being constructed in a rural part of the country  in Wylye in Wiltshire required a concrete floor slab to be suspended on pre cast concrete piles due to extremely poor ground conditions and heavy loading requirements for the storage of road salt. Nationwide Concrete Flooring was contorted by Britannia Construction to design and build the steel fibre reinforced jointless concrete floor slab. The 5D 65/60BG steel fibres supplied by Bekeart were integrated into the readymixed concrete supplied by Cemex Materials UK Limited, on site utilising the concrete contractors steel fibre conveyor system. A dry shake sprinkle topping and surface hardener was applied and power floated into the surface of the concrete. The dry shake increases the abrasion resistance of the concrete which is extremely beneficial to the client in cases where loading shovels are constantly trafficking the floor. Details for the steel fibre flooring system are listed below:

  • Slab depth – 280mm
  • Steel fibre reinforcement – Bekaert 5D 65/60BG @ 35kg/m3
  • Floor loading – 75kN/m2 UDL
  • Pile grid – 2.94 x 3.36
  • Pile diamater – 800mm
  • Abrasion resistance – Special (Bs8204 part 2)
  • Dry shake topping – Sika Syntop
  • Concrete – C35/45
