The warehouse where the concrete floor was laid
A prestigious new warehouse at Markham Vale on a new industrial park off junction 29A of the M1 near Chesterfield required a high tolerance concrete floor slab.
Nationwide Concrete Flooring were contracted to install the powerfloated industrial concrete floor slab to the required surface tolerances. Due to the thermal values required for the building, insulation board was installed underneath the slab. This meant the readymix concrete had to be pumped as the insulation and steel fabric mesh reinforcement were all pre set prior to the casting of the concrete.
A dry shake surface hardener (sprinkle topping) supplied by Permaban was applied to the surface of the concrete floor slab to increase the abrasion resistance to category AR1. Due to the extreme weather temperatures a blended cement mix was used in the concrete to minimize risk of delamination between concrete surface and the shake sprinkle topping.
The client specified a flatness tolerance of FM2 special which other companies using direct discharge would have found difficult to achieve, but which Nationwide managed with ease by with a combination of its skilled workforce, pump laying and laser screed.

Steel fibre concrete floor laid using laser screed in Grimsby, North Lincolnshire
An overlay to an existing concrete floor slab presented a problem in terms of sub strata levels for the design and construction of the new concrete floor slab. The levels meant that a lot of the existing concrete had to be removed in order to give the new concrete floor slab a consistent depth of 150mm. The building was approximately 20 years old and so had columns at close centres causing concerns for the laying procedure and the inducing of cracks from shrinkage restraint. A floor loading of 30KN/M2 was required by the client, a speculative industrial developer.
Nationwide Concrete Flooring Ltd chose a steel fibre floor slab design with saw cut induced contraction joints to cope with both shrinkage restraint from columns and to eliminate the cutting of mesh fabric sheets with numerous laps etc.
Steel fibres supplied by Bekaert one of the most well known and reputable suppliers in the world were integrated into the ready mix concrete on site to avoid any mixing and dosage problems.

A highly polished power floated finish was required by the client as the end users were not known due to the warehouse units been speculative. Steel fibres in concrete can often become a problem at the surface of the concrete floor slab during the finishing and power floating process. Experienced staff and modern equipment are essential to maintaining a quality finish to the concrete floor slab – See photo.
The saw cut induced contraction joins were installed the following day and immediately sealed with instant seal 101 – See photo.

Nationwide Diamond Contracts’ Instant Seal 101 is the perfect solution for saw cut joints in both internal and external concrete floor slabs. It is installed using the joint sealant machine shown in the photos and this gives instant protection to the edges of the saw cut joints and stops the ingress of debris. This is especially useful in grain store, poultry unit, food and hygiene, and industrial and commercial applications in warehouses. The joint also minimizes breakdown from heavy trafficking from forklifts and pallet trucks in busy industrial warehouses.

Nationwide Concrete Flooring are pleased to have completed the new concrete floor slab at the former Dunston shipbuilder’s yard in Hessle, near Hull. The area of 1,800 square metres was concreted in just one day using our laser screed concrete laying system and fibre reinforced ready mixed concrete supplied by Edgar Readymix (tel. 01482 712684). The saw cut joints were then cut the following morning and sealed with Instant Seal 101 unique joint sealant system.
